Cycle 6

Cycle 6 - 09/11/17

This really felt like the home stretch to us in terms of treatment as the outlook from the last 2 examinations were good. When we saw the consultant at GOSH we told her about the rash he had following the last two previous cycles. When she saw the photos she was sure this was an allergic reaction to one of the chemotherapy drugs (carboplatin) and it wasn't given to Noah on his last cycle because of the risk of it getting worse. After assessing the risks of leaving it out and giving it to him we were happy to go ahead with just the Etoposide and Vincristine. He did have a hospital admission during this cycle but his blood counts were significantly better than normal without the carboplatin attacking his white blood cells. It was the first time he hadn't been neutropenic or needed a platelet transfusion. And he didn't get the rash, so it obviously was an allergic reaction to carboplatin. Noah's hair started to thicken and continues to grow every day. The biggest difference I could see is his energy levels improving.

Gosh clinic visit

3 weeks after his last chemo we had a clinic visit with Noah's consultant at GOSH to check him over in terms of side effects from chemotherapy. She was very happy with him and in a weird way we had a lovely day. Noah was so energetic and full of beans. He loved getting on the train and the big london buses. He was told twice by strangers what a good boy he'd been on the bus, he got some jelly beans from santa claus at Waterloo station and a baby chino with Mummy and Grandad to go with his giant chocolate button. I asked the consultant how likely a relapse was and what would happen in this scenario and she explained it might just need some laser or cryotherapy. In more extreme circumstances he may need intra-arterial chemo is administered directly into an artery that is connected to the eye (to the best of my understanding!). After this clinic visit I really could see the end of treatment in sight and let myself get truely excited for christmas - it was the best present we could have asked for.
